ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose was to compare operating room (OR) nurses and general ward nurses on their communication competence and interpersonal relationship ability within the medical team. METHODS: Participants were 276 nurses (OR 122, ward 154) working in one of 4 university hospitals located in I and K areas. Data were collected using a questionnaire and data collection was done in June, 2013. Comparisons between OR nurses and general ward nurses on communication competence and interpersonal relationship ability were analyzed using ANCOVA. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in communication competence (F=11.96, p=.001) with average score for OR nurses at 3.37 points and ward nurses at 3.53 points. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in interpersonal relationship ability (F=15.51, p<.001) with the average score for OR nurses at 3.30 points and ward nurses at 3.50 points. CONCLUSION: The results indicate a need to develop a variety of programs to promote communication competence in OR nurses and to enhance the openness of interpersonal relationship ability in human resource management.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study is to identify the factors that affect middle-aged workers' health promoting behaviors. METHODS: 214 middle-aged workers participated in surveys, and the data were collected from August to September 2012 and analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with PASW 18.0 program. RESULTS: It was found that among the factors, the degree of job stress (t=7.69, p<.001) and depression (t=6.23, p<.001) were significantly high for type D individuals, while non type D showed meaningful degree of self-related health status (t=-3.66, p<.001) and health promoting behaviors (t=-4.71, p<.001). The notable variable that affected the health promoting behaviors of the middle-aged workers was depression for both type D (beta=-.357, p= .029) and non type D (beta=-.325, p<.001) individuals, and this variable accounted for 24.1% and 18.2% respectively. CONCLUSION: The study revealed that the middle-aged workers showed high degree of job stress and depression that influenced on their health promoting behaviors. Thus, they are recommended to receive health management programs that offer treatment through consulting considering their individual personalities.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate in-depth and to understand the experience of people living with HIV who work as caregivers for patients with AIDS. METHODS: Data were collected from December 2010 to April 2011 through focus group and in-depth interviews. Ten people with HIV who work as caregivers for patients with AIDS participated in the research. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method (1978). RESULTS: The results showed the important themes to be 'feelings of sympathy', 'burden of caregiving', 'identifying one's own self-worth' and 'hoping for a meaningful future'. People with HIV experienced deep empathy with patients with AIDS, and, even though they suffered physical and emotional distress from the caregiving process, they felt a sense of self-worth and found their existence connected with the world. Furthermore, they were taking more active care of themselves and hoping for a meaningful future. CONCLUSION: For successful social adaptation of people with HIV currently in job-seeking activities, various vocational rehabilitation services are necessary. The results of this study could be used in developing effective social support services for people living with HIV attempting workforce re-entry.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between LLFDI and quality of sleep in older men with prostatic hypertrophic symptoms. METHODS: The secondary analysis of data collected for the 2nd stage BK(Brain Korea)21 project was performed. The original data were collected using a cross-sectional, face-to-face, and private interview method. The questionnaires consisted of prostatic hypertrophic symptoms, late-life function and disability, quality of sleep, and demographic profiles. RESULTS: A total of 112 older men included in this study. The major findings of this study were as follow; 1) 29.5% of participants had more than moderate symptoms of prostatic hypertrophy. 2) There were a significant positive correlation of prostatic hypertrophic symptoms with subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medication, and daytime dysfunction found, whereas there was a negative relationship with frequency dimension. 3) The LLFDI is significantly associated with urgency, weak stream, and intermittency. The quality of sleep is significantly associated with weak stream which explained 11.2% of variance. CONCLUSION: These results may contribute to a better understanding late-life function and disability, quality of sleep in older men with prostatic hypertrophic symptoms. Therefore, health programs for prompting older men's health should be planned based on results of the study.

ABSTRACT

A benign metastasizing pulmonary leiomyoma(BMPL) is a rare disease that is usually detected years after a hysterectomy or myomectomy. Despite the benign pathological appearance, these tumors can metastasize and become clinically malignant. Recently, we experienced case of BMPL with hemoptysis. A 43-year-old woman, who had undergone a hysterectomy due to uterine leiomyoma 8 years ago, visited our department complaining of intermittent hemoptysis. A chest CT showed bilateral multiple nodular lesions. Video-associated thoracoscopy was performed. The resected small nodular lesion revealed the proliferation of spindle cells without mitosis or nuclear atypism. The lesions tested positive to the smooth muscle marker (actin) by immunohistochemical staining. Therefore, the multiple nodules were considered as benign metastasizing pulmonary leiomyoma from a uterine leiomyoma. GnRH analogue therapy was initiated. A chest CT showed that the size and number of pulmonary lesions did not change after 3 months, and the patient was symptom free.

ABSTRACT

Peritoneal mesothelioma is an unusual disease which diffusely involves the peritoneal surface. The incidence is approximately one per 1,000,000, and one fifth to one third of all mesothelioma are peritoneal in origin. Asbestos exposure is linked to the development of peritoneal mesothelioma as a significant etiology, but further investigation shoud be conducted. Abdominal sonography, abdominal CT and cytologic examination of ascitic fluid are used to confirm the diagnosis, but rarely provides proper diagnosis. Laparoscopy with biopsy is the most common diagnostic method for definite diagnosis of mesothelioma. Cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy have been suggested for better survival since the median survival after the initial diagnosis is near to 50 months. This report describes a case of 73-years-old male patient presented with abdominal pain and distension. This patient had not been exposed to asbestos. Abdominal sonography and CT showed massive ascites, multiple omental masses and peritoneal thickening. It was difficult to distinguish peritoneal mesothelioma from carcinomatosis. Laparoscopy and peritoneal biopsy was conducted and immunostaining examination confirmed the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma.

ABSTRACT

Perforation of the colon occurs in 0.2 to 2% of all colonoscopic examinations. The most common sites of perforation are rectosigmoid junction and cecal area. Colonic perforation, leading to tension pneumoperitoneum in most cases, may be caused by direct trauma or pressurized air. It should be suspected in patients with hypotension, tachycardia and tachypnea during or after the colonoscopy. An 83-year-old woman was admitted due to pulmonary embolism and left cerebellar infarction. Colonoscopy was performed due to bloody diarrhea. She was diagnosed as cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis. One week after the colonoscopy, colon perforation was incidentally found on ascending colon, and tension pneumoperitoneum occurred immediately after the procedure. The perforated site was primarily closed and the patient discharged 20 days later. Herein, we report a case of tension pneumoperitoneum following colonoscopy in a patient with CMV colitis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was performed to identify the difference in attitudes and knowledge between high school and college girls regarding sexual education. METHOD: Data was collected from questionnaires given to 99 high school girls and 110 college girls in Seoul and Kyunggi-do. Data was analyzed using the SPSS 12.0 program. RESULT: In middle school, the time given to sexual education influenced the students present knowledge of sexual education. The sources of sex education were friends, seniors and mass media. The score for sexual knowledge in high school girls was 12.78 and for college girls 24.19. The field that obtained the highest score in territorial sexual knowledge was 'reproductive physiology' in the high school girls. There was little awareness of venereal disease, AIDS, contraception. Sexual attitudes among college girls was more open than that of high school girls. There was a positive correlation between sexual knowledge and attitudes(r=.535, p<.001). The significant difference of items were residence and sexual experience(p<.001). CONCLUSION: This study was shown that realistic knowledge teaching of venereal diseases, contraception and AIDS should be included in planning of sexual education programs. Specially, the groups had sexual experience and college girls in the dormitory will need more specific teaching.

ABSTRACT

Hyponatremia which is due to excessive sodium loss in the urine and decrease in extracellular fluid volume following an acute or chronic central nervous system injury, has been conjunctively described as cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS). This syndrome is often confused with dilutional hyponatremia due to inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. Accurate diagnosis and management are mandatory for improvement of the course of the disease. This report describes a case of a 31-year-old male patient with CSWS associated with tuberculous meningitis. The patient exhibited hyponatremia, polyuria, excessive natriuresis, volume depletion, and hypotension. He was diagnosed to manifest CSWS and was treated by administration of fluids, salt, and fludrocortisone. After the respective treatments, symptoms of polyuria and hypotension were gradually resolved and hyponatremia was corrected.

ABSTRACT

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum(SPM) is an uncommon disease that is defined as the nontraumatic presence of free air in the mediastinum without any apparent underlying disease. We report a case of recurrent spontaneous pneumomediastinum without any direct precipitating cause. A 21-year-old woman was admitted to hospital suffering from chest pain that occurred during walking(?). She had previously been well. She did not complain of cough or vomiting prior to this presentation. Upon admission, the physical examination and Electrocardiogram findings were normal. The chest x-ray and chest computed-tomography showed a pneumomediastinum. She was successfully managed conservatively. Twenty seven months later, she was readmitted with chest pain, which again occurred during the same activity. The recurrent SPM was confirmed by the chest x-ray and chest computed-tomography. She was managed in the same manner as before and made an uneventful recovery. This is the first case of recurrent SPM in Korea.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the demand for health information on the internet and to get priorities in the development of health information. We classified health information into 13 types by healthcare system. The Internet survey for the general public was conducted October 23 through November 2, 2001 and the survey for health professionals was conducted October 23 through November 16, 2001 using mail. The responses of 316 laypersons and 150 health professionals were analysed. The general public ranked disease information (81.8%), self diagnosis information (79.2%), general health information (79.1%), emergency information (78.7%) highly and most health professionals needed education information (90.5%), academic information (88.5%), disease information (88.4%). Considering both need and usefulness, the health information types which need to be developed for the general public were self diagnosis information, general health information, drug information, examination information, terminology information, healthcare organization information and those for health professionals were self diagnosis information, healthcare organization information, healthcare manpower information, drug information, examination information.
